It was recently announced that “S.C.O.O.B.”, the animated Scooby-Doo movie set to be released in 2018, will be the start of the new Hanna-Barbara Animated Universe. Many of these shows, such as The Flintstones and Yogi Bear, haven’t had new shows in decades, yet are still beloved cartoons that we show our children to this day.
But, fun fact, this isn’t the first time that we’ve had a connected universe between these cartoons. From crossover movies like “The Flintstones Meet The Jetsons” to shows like “Laff-o-lympics”, these characters have met and acted together before. Looking at today’s “Cinematic Universe” craze, what with the DCEU, MCU, Universal Movie Monsters, and others, I’m going to guess that there’s going to be much more interconnectivity between these shows than there were in the past. That isn’t to say that they won’t be separate – this is the chance for a reboot for all of these shows, and they won’t take that away.
But who will come back? Looking at the long, long list of Hanna-Barbera shows, we know that only so many will continue. Some, like “Superfriends” won’t come back because they have licensed characters, while others, such as “Rubik, the Amazing Cube” just seem too out there. We also don’t want to over saturate ourselves immediately, so only a few will be showing up in “S.C.O.O.B.” We know that Scooby-Doo and the gang will be there, but who else will join him?
The first place I went to guess was the title. It’s an acronym, so what does it stand for? I went for Scooby (S), Captain Caveman (C) and Bear (as in Yogi, for B). The problem with this theory is the O’s. Do you have any idea how few Hanna-Barbara character names start with O? I couldn’t find any that are big enough name to fit the bill, which kind of scraps that idea.
In doing more research I came upon something interesting: DC recently announced a new line of comic books based on the Hanna-Barbara characters. Announced series include “Future Quest” (Jonny Quest and Space Ghost), “Scooby: Appocalypse” (take a guess), “Wacky Race Land” (Wacky Races, as well as Dastardly and Muttley), and “The Flintstones”. All of these series are obvious choices for reboot. While I doubt the comics are going to be canon in the new universe, I feel like they’re bringing back these characters for a reason. I’m going to guess that “S.C.O.O.B.” will feature, outside of the Scooby Gang, the cast of “Future Quest”, maybe with references to The Flintstones. I feel like those series would work well together.
Why not Flintstones? Because, due to the time when these series take place, I feel like Flintstones wouldn’t fit in. Instead, I’d suggest bringing them in for another crossover special with fellow family show “The Jetsons”. One already exists, which was released in 1987, which I highly suggest to fans of the shows. I feel like, if those two shows will cross over with anything, it’ll be each other.
This, of course, leaves one large question mark. One of the most popular shows that Hanna-Barbera ever released, which also isn’t getting a comic book adaptation as of now. That question mark is, of course, Yogi Bear. Where would he be? Well, looking at him, he doesn’t quite follow the rules set by Scooby, Muttley, or Bandit. Instead, he falls into another category: that of anthropomorphic animals. QuickDraw McGraw. Huckleberry Hound. Snagglepuss. These characters all fall under this umbrella. As long as Yogi is coming back, expect him to bring a few of these with him.
I’ll probably post my hopes for a movie list before too awfully long, but this is what I’m guessing for the one movie we have announced. So what do you guys think? Are you excited by this? Who do you want to show up in “S.C.O.O.B”? Tell me in the comments, or tweet me @ChasePix.
Don’t forget to look for the Hanna-Barbara comics at the end of May 2016, as well as “S.C.O.O.B.” on September 21, 2018.
